METHOD · INVESTABILITY SCORE

How the investability score works

A 0 to 100 score for 199 countries, built from six weighted pillars of sourced data. Higher means a better business and investment climate, more openness to foreign capital, and more upside that an investor can actually capture.

The score rewards strong institutions, open rules for foreign investors, stable macro conditions, political stability, growth with room to catch up, and deep, connected markets. It penalises closed economies, high inflation and debt, instability, and sanctions. Every indicator is mapped to 0 to 100 with fixed anchors, so a country's score does not move just because another country changed. Model version 2.0, data as of 2026-10-09.

Rules that cap a score

After weighting, a score is capped when a legal or security fact makes ordinary investment impossible or unsafe. The cap is shown on the country profile.

Maximum 25Comprehensive sanctions or an investment ban: not investable by ordinary routes: North Korea, Iran, Syria, Cuba
Maximum 40Heavy sanctions or capital restrictions on foreign investors: Russia, Belarus, Venezuela, Myanmar
Maximum 40Political stability indicator in the bottom band (active conflict or state breakdown)

Bands and confidence

Low risk: 75 and above. Moderate: 60 to 74. Elevated: 45 to 59. High: below 45. Where an indicator is missing for a country it is dropped and the rest re-weighted. Confidence reports how much of the weighting had data: High is 85% or more, Medium 65% or more, otherwise Low. The OECD restrictiveness index covers about half of countries; elsewhere openness rests on FDI inflows and trade.

Sources and limits

World Bank World Development Indicators and Worldwide Governance Indicators, OECD FDI Regulatory Restrictiveness Index, IMF World Economic Outlook, and World Bank Findex. Governance indicators are perceptions-based and move slowly. The score is a screening tool, not a forecast or a rating, and it is not investment advice. A high score does not make a specific deal safe, and a low score does not rule out an opportunity.
