Deep and stretched. A deeper domestic market sitting alongside higher debt pressure. Size helps liquidity; pressure raises the cost of a policy mistake.

Debt as a share of GDP shows the size of the stock against the economy. It does not show who holds it, in which currency it is owed, or when it falls due. Those details sit in the debt office reports of the government and in IMF country documents, and decide most of the risk to a bondholder.

A local currency bond pays a coupon in local money. For a foreign holder the return is that coupon, plus or minus the price change of the bond, plus or minus the change in the exchange rate. Inflation and depreciation tend to move together.

Sovereign debt pressure

04 / SCREEN

A weighted percentile screen of seven sourced indicators. Higher means more pressure on the government's ability to service local and foreign debt at current settings. It is not a credit rating and it is not a forecast.

53
Moderate pressure ModerateRanks 115 of 187 scored markets, lowest first. Indicators covering 100% of the weight are available.
Debt pressure inputs

Each input is converted to a percentile among all covered markets. The percentile column is the pressure that input adds, after inverting the indicators where a lower value means more pressure.

Local market depth

05 / DEPTH

A weighted percentile screen of four sourced indicators that proxy how deep the domestic financial system is, which in turn limits how much local currency debt a market can absorb. Higher means deeper.

77
Deep DeepRanks 28 of 140 scored markets, deepest first.
Market depth inputs

Higher percentiles mean a deeper domestic financial system. Bank non-performing loans are inverted, so fewer bad loans add depth.

Financial depth is a rough proxy. A government can have a deep bond market with little bank credit, and the reverse. Check the market's own turnover, bid and offer spreads and investor base before relying on it.

Currency regime and instruments

06 / STRUCTURE

Euro area member. Government debt is issued in euros. There is no national exchange rate; spreads over the benchmark reflect national credit risk.

Instruments a government bond market can contain

General market structure. This list describes instrument types that exist in bond markets. It does not say which of them Spain issues. Check the debt office or central bank for the instruments in issue. Editorial text last reviewed 2026-10-24.

Routes and diligence

07 / ACCESS
Typical ways to hold the bonds
  • Hard currency sovereign funds. Funds that hold dollar or euro denominated government and quasi-government bonds of emerging and frontier issuers. Currency risk sits with the fund's base currency, credit risk stays with the issuers.
  • Local currency government bond funds. Funds that hold local currency bonds. Returns include the exchange rate move against the fund's base currency, which can dominate the coupon in either direction.
  • Index tracking products. Exchange-traded products that follow a published emerging market bond index. Index rules decide which countries and bond sizes are included, so many frontier markets are absent.
  • Direct purchase through local custodians. Institutional investors can often buy local bonds through a custodian and a local central securities depository. Registration, tax and repatriation steps vary and can take weeks.
  • Regional securities markets. In currency unions the government securities market is regional. Access runs through the regional central bank or its appointed intermediaries.
  • Multilateral and development finance programmes. Some development institutions place local currency bonds or back issuance, giving a route into markets that are otherwise hard to reach.
Questions before any purchase
  • Which currency is the bond in, and who bears the exchange rate risk?
  • Which law governs the bond, and where would a dispute be heard?
  • Is there a withholding or capital gains tax for foreign holders, and is there a treaty rate?
  • How are coupons and principal repatriated, and have there been delays or controls?
  • How is the bond settled and held, and which central securities depository is used?
  • How often does the bond trade, and what is a realistic bid and offer spread?
  • What share of the debt is held by domestic banks, the central bank and foreign investors?
  • What is the maturity profile, and how much falls due in the next two years?
Risks specific to bonds

Educational content only. The bond screens on this page are derived from public macro indicators. They are not credit ratings, yield forecasts, price quotes or recommendations to buy or sell any security. Bond values can fall, and investing in frontier and emerging markets carries significant risk, including total loss.

Method and sources

09 / FORMULA

Two percentile screens built only from indicators that carry a source and an as-of date. A percentile is the share of covered markets with a lower value. Weights are fixed in advance and shown in the tables above. Terciles of each screen set the Lower, Moderate and Higher bands.

Data version 2026-10-09. This page shows no yields, spreads or ratings unless a sourced yield file is loaded. See the methodology and the bond screen method.
